Public transport

a) Bus transport

The bus is an affordable public transport option. The main Koper bus station is at Kolodvorska cesta 11, 6000 Koper, where there is also a train station.

You can check the bus connections and departure times at arriva.si. Enter the name of the initial (departure) and final (arrival) station and the date of travel and you will see all the bus departure times for that day and the ticket price.

Tickets can be purchased in cash from the bus driver.

Prices (April 2023): a journey within Koper costs 80 cents, the Ankaran-Koper route also costs 80 cents, Koper-Izola €1.80, Koper-Portorož €2.8, Koper-Piran €3.1 and Koper-Ljubljana between €9.6 and €10.7.

To buy a ticket, it's best to have change, coins or the smallest possible notes ready. If you are a frequent bus user, it is cheaper to get a monthly pass, which can be bought from the driver or online. Some bus stops do not have a direct connection, so you will need to change buses.

Driving Licence

You need a driving licence to drive a car. To obtain it, you have to take a payable course, which includes theoretical and practical parts. You can obtain a new driving licence or apply for the recognition of an existing one that you have already obtained in another country. You can find out more at:

Exchanging a Foreign Driving Licence for a Slovenian One

If you are resident in Slovenia and you meet the conditions for driving a motor vehicle, you can request the replacement of a valid driving licence with a Slovenian one. A Slovenian driving licence will be issued to you if you pass the practical part of the test.

You do not have to do the practical driving test if you hold a driving licence from an EU Member State, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino, the United Kingdom, the three Crown Dependencies of the British Isles (the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey), Gibraltar or Switzerland for all categories, Japan for categories AM, A1, A2, A, B1 and B, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates or Australia for categories B1 and B.

When your driving licence is replaced, the licence issued abroad is returned to the authority that issued it in your country. You can apply for a replacement of the driving licence at any administrative unit, where you must submit:

  • Your current driving licence,
  • A valid medical certificate,
  • A 35 × 45 mm photograph,
  • Proof of payment of the administrative fee and the driving licence form,
  • Proof that, at the time you obtained your licence, you were either habitually resident in the country that issued the valid licence or had been studying there for at least six months.

You can take the practical part of the test at a driving school of your choice in your area. You can find out more at:
