Learning Slovenian

General

The Employment Service offers you the opportunity to take part in a free programme that includes a Slovenian language course and a one-off entry-level (A1) exam.You can register for the course by contacting your personal adviser at the labour office where you are registered (e.g. Koper Labour Office). You must pass the Slovenian language exam within one year of registering in the Register of the unemployed. More information at knowledge of the Slovenian language.

The Initial Integration of Immigrants Programme – ZIP is a free programme for third- country nationals to learn the Slovenian language and about the Slovenian society. The courses last up to 180 hours.

If you want to attend the course, you must obtain a Certificate of Eligibility for Participation in the Unified Program issued by the administrative unit. You will have to pay EUR 22.60 to apply for and receive the certificate.

In addition to free courses, you can enrol in Slovenian (or other language) lessons at private language schools (e.g. Nista Language Centre; Šmarska cesta 5d, 6000 Koper or Eurocenter Language School, Ferrarska ulica 14, 6000 Koper, and others).   • Courses on Slovenian for foreigners at different levels (depending on your level of proficiency),

    • Entry-level exam (A1) to renew your residence permit or comply with labour market regulations,
    • A basic level examination (A2/B1) for Slovenian citizenship or for a permanent residence permit,
  • Opportunities for learning, lifelong learning and career development at the headquarters of the Folk High School of Koper and Employment Service in Izola (free counselling),
  • Centre for self-directed learning, where learning is free of charge. You can turn to a counsellor for advice, guidance and help with your independent learning (languages, computing, interactive materials and more),
  • Free access to the web and a wide range of materials.

The Morje Multigenerational Centre offers language learning, creative, cooking, sports and leisure workshops, interesting lectures, discussion groups and socialising for residents of all ages. All the centre's activities are free of charge.

Activities for Immigrants

  • Organising courses in Slovenian for foreigners and providing information on how to apply for the Slovenian language exam (basic and higher level),
  • Teaching assistance for immigrant children in Slovenian and other school subjects, as well as help with enrolling children in primary and secondary schools,
  • The active integration of immigrants into the local environment (inviting them to volunteer, organising international cooking workshops, informal socialising and learning about Slovenian culture and language),
  • Help and advice on everyday matters (finding sworn translators, notaries, going to the post office, bank, help with mobile telephony, accessing a personal doctor, enrolling in university, filling in various forms (e.g. recognition of diplomas), help with writing a CV or job application, help with finding a job and preparing for a job interview, etc.).

Cooperation with Other Institutions: The Multigenerational Centre provides information on how to enrol at the University of Primorska.In cooperation with the Folk High School, it is possible to take a test exam in Slovenian.

Core Activities:  Founded in 1991 in Koper, the Nista School is the first private language school in the Slovenian Istria and the Karst region, In addition to payable language courses in Koper (English, Italian, Spanish, German, Russian, French, Slovene for foreigners and many other languages), Nista also offers language courses abroad, in primary and secondary schools in Europe and elsewhere, as well as translation and proofreading services. Courses are aimed at children, teenagers, adults and businesses.
